Offering the advantages of both a hard floor and hybrid off road camper trailer, the award winning Pioneer Mitchell boasts class leading interior room, ease of setup and range topping comforts.
The Pioneer Mitchell was awarded the ‘2017 Off Road Camper Trailer of the Year Award’ in the Hard Floor category, winning votes in the key areas of Comforts, Ease of Use, Quality, Value, Innovation and Self-Sufficiency. Here’s a short video from the awards.
The key to an enjoyable holiday is comforts and the Mitchell delivers in spades. Hard walls and roof around the bed provide cosy, cocoon-like isolation from the elements, yet the fold-out hard floor and pop up roof provide an airy sense of space.
When it comes time for a deep slumber, a queen size inner spring mattress supports your every muscle, while the breathable slatted base reduces condensation and discomfort. Large side windows and a skylight above provide for stargazing at night and allow good cross flow ventilation when it’s warm. Midge mesh and block out blinds protect against bug and sun invasion.
The bed is flanked by reading lights on flexible storks. There’s also a courtesy light and step at the foot of the bed and 240V, 12V and USB sockets nearby to power all your devices.
A Truma gas hot water system is plumbed to both the kitchen and shower providing that extra level of luxury when remote camping.
Ease of Use
Pioneer Campers has introduced a new level of innovation with the Mitchell. Setup is a cinch and avoids the heavy lifting and excessive bending as with similar campers. Whether it’s a quick overnight stop or a longer stay, the main tent can be setup in as little as 1 minute. The kitchen and quick awning take a further two minutes. It’s not so much the time saving but the ease of it all – it really does bring touring into a new dimension.
The Mitchell comes fully equipped with a stainless steel roll out kitchen with swing away two burner stove, food preparation areas, cutlery drawer, dish drying rack and a two drawer pantry. The stove is positioned parallel to the camper for maximum weather protection. Food preparation areas are generous and can be used from any angle. There are drawers for utensils, plates, crockery and pots and pans. Hot and cold water are pumped to the sink.
Look around the Mitchell and it’s easy to see how the designers have put function as a priority. Generous storage caters for even those bulky items like chairs and tables without encumbering the bed area.
Starting at the front, the Mitchell houses three jerry cans and two large gas bottles. The protective wings around the gas bottles drop away to make it easy for loading after each refill. And a 50L cavity allows you to collect firewood on the move.
A large 340L storage box sits under the fixed solar panel and can accommodate the awning, ensuite, chairs and tables. The fridge box measures 700L and can swallow a monster Evakool 105L dual zone fridge freezer – just like the one we’re giving away!
Alongside is a dual drawer slide-out pantry. The top section runs for almost the full width of the camper and can be accessed inside or out. The bottom slide out drawer can accommodate pots, pans and other cookware. Handy!
The main roll out kitchen features an easy access side drawer for crockery, while utensils are housed in the swing away bench top near the stove.
Stepping inside the camper, the slatted bed base lifts on gas struts to provide unimpeded access to the storage area below.
On the outside, the far side incorporates two large compartments. The first offers 415L of storage, shared with the pantry, and is a good for stackable boxes. The second offers space next to the fridge in an external box, making it suitable for a generator or BBQ.
A huge 700 litre fridge storage box swallows a a monster 110L fridge/freezer which can be accessed from both sides of the camper. The box includes heavy duty slides, 240V/12V power, lighting and a dust filter which helps the fridge breathe.
Canvas, Tent & Flooring
The Mitchell has a composite floor construction lined with floorboard vinyl that not only looks good but is hard wearing. The roof is solid fibreglass and lined with a durable headlining. A full length 2 metre wide awning is included as standard with a quick half size awning available as an option.
Custom Paintwork and Canvas
In addition to the standard two tone Bright White over Black bodywork and Dark Grey canvas colours, you can choose from a preselected range for the ultimate customisation experience. See the camper configurator to check the various combinations.
Water is supplied by a 120L stainless steel, baffled water tank with 12V pump to the kitchen. An optional 60L tank is available. For convenience, a hand pump nearby provides easy access for roadside stops. All water runs through a filter and a level indicator keeps track of reserves.
Batteries, Power, Lighting and Solar
The Pioneer Mitchell has one of the best power systems in its class. It uses the premium Redarc Manager 30 Battery Management System to charge and monitor all inputs and outputs to the 110Ah AGM deep cycle battery. A second battery is available as an option.
The system includes 30A 240V and DC-DC 12V chargers and a vehicle isolator to prevent accidental discharge of the starting battery. Supplementing these inputs, a dedicated solar socket feeds directly to a multi power point tracking (MPPT) solar regulator to extract the most charge from the available solar rays. This system ensures you get full utilisation from the available resources.
A monitoring panel with activity logs shows the incoming and outgoing activity as well as a projected range based on existing discharge rates.
A 240V system is also standard with safety switch and sockets inside and out.
A Redarc 12V 80watt polycrystalline solar panel is fitted to the top storage box. It is hard wired to the multi power point tracking (MPPT) solar regulator in the battery management system.
Body, Chassis and Suspension
Like every Pioneer camper trailer, the Mitchell comes standard with a hot dipped galvanized chassis with rear receiver. This can be used for recoveries or attaching a bike rack. The chassis rides on fully independent trailing arm coil suspension with shock absorbers. A Hitchmaster D035 All-terrain hitch couples to the vehicle.
Wheels and Brakes
For reliable off road explorations, the Mitchell is fitted with 16 x 8″ CSA Black Matt Alloys with premium BFG All Terrain rubber plus a matching spare wheel. Twelve inch Alko electric drum brakes take care of stopping duties.
A large compartment within the main body swallows 415L of gear which can be accessed from both sides of the camper. On the kitchen side it contains the 145L slide out internal/external pantry.
Up front, there’s a separate, enclosed and lockable storage area for 3 jerry cans, two 9kg gas bottles and a utility area useful for firewood. Front facing panels are protected with Rhinocoat. Lastly, there’s a 340L top storage box positioned above the fridge box which is good for canvas and awning mats.
